Elderly people often get treated badly, which is not acceptable at all, but many of these elderly people are being abused and neglected on a regular basis. Are you one of the people who work in a facility for the aged and do not realize that this behavior is going on right under your nose. It is very important that we as caregivers know how to recognize when abuse is taking place. Here are a few things that you need to be aware of while you are caring for the aged.

Elder Neglect is something that can be managed if you know what to look for. If you come across any elderly person who has untreated bedsores, is dehydrated, has not been eating properly or has extremely bad personal hygiene, then you need to recognize that these individuals are being neglected and have been suffering for a while already.

Other signs of elder neglect would include poor coloration, sunken in cheeks or eyes, cuts, burns and any other wounds on a constant basis. You should also look out for patients who are frequently visiting the doctor or hospital and for patients who are not receiving the correct medication from staff. It is very important that you watch the way the patients are reacting. Many elderly people who are being neglected will always appear afraid or non responsive. They will also not be willing to talk openly about their problems and can often appear disorientated or confused most of the time.

Pay special attention to patients who show these signs, as they are almost always suffering from some form of neglect or abuse. Think about what you would do if it was your mother or father who was being treated this way. You would not be happy and you would do everything in your power to make sure that it stops. As a caregiver, you need to do your best to look after every person that comes into your facility. Many of them will not have long to live, so why not make their last time as comfortable as possible.
