Considering becoming an adult foster home is a big, wonderful step but it also entails a lot of work. This is not something to be taken lightly. Please also remember this isn’t just about you and your family; this is about any prospective residents. The residents range from 18 to seniors facing the end of life. There are very strict rules and regulations. The following are just some of the minimum requirements it takes to become licensed:

  • You must be of good character.
  • You must pass a background and criminal records check.
  • You must be at least 21 years old.
  • Your home must meet the safety and structural requirements the AFH-DD program  requires.
  • You must be financially stable with assets that back your decision to start an AFH-DD.
  • You must not be related to any resident by marriage, birth or adoption.
  • You must be literate and have the ability to communicate with therapists and doctors both orally and written.
  • You need to be of very sound mind and body.
  • You must complete a first aid, CPR, and basic training course.
  • You must not have any type of been found guilty or had/have any substantiated drug abuse.
  • You must have 1 year experience in working with developmentally disabled people.

After your home is licensed, it must also be inspected before it can accept residents. The licensing laws must be followed and kept up to date and the home is to be inspected regularly while in business. Although we could not found it be a requirement, insuring your AFH-DD home for you and your residents is a very good idea and should be thought out carefully.

Even though there are definitely lots of rules and regulations, the satisfaction and emotional bonds you make will out-do the other things by far. It takes a very special person to open their heart and home and make it an Adult Foster Home. Check into things, give CDDP program licensing staff a call and look into your heart and make the informed decision that’s right for you.
